Quality

We’re investing in the advancement and quality of our care through state-of-the-art technology and clinical research programs. Through our efforts, we have received prestigious quality awards.

Shannon Medical Center received an “A” Hospital Safety Grade from The Leapfrog Group, a national nonprofit upholding the standard of patient safety in hospitals and ambulatory surgery centers. This distinction recognizes Shannon’s work to prioritize patient safety by protecting patients from preventable harm and errors in the hospital. Shannon is the only hospital in the west Texas region to achieve an “A” rating for the Spring of 2024.

Game-Changing Technology: Shannon Medical Center is accredited by the Surgical Review Corporation (SRC) as a Center of Excellence in Robotic Surgery. This accreditation recognizes Shannon’s commitment and high standard of delivery of quality patient care and safety.

Shannon Cancer Center Certified as Tattoo- and Mark-Free Radiation Oncology Program: Shannon’s radiation oncology department at the Shannon Cancer Center is now officially recognized as a tattoo- and mark-free radiation treatment center – the only program of its kind in the western half of Texas. This designation from Vision RT highlights Shannon’s adoption of surface-guided radiation therapy (SGRT), which eliminates the need for permanent or semi-permanent tattoos for patients undergoing radiation treatments. This exclusive, cutting-edge technology helps Shannon offer more comfortable and more accurate treatment for radiation patients.

Access

We’re making a meaningful impact by addressing the most significant health issues facing our region, including:

Behavioral health care services

During the next year, Shannon is planning to open the first psychiatric urgent care facility that will be located on Shannon’s South Campus. It will provide more expedient access to behavioral health care and provide an alternative point of care to the emergency room for individuals not experiencing a psychiatric crisis. Shannon is also exploring the possibility of creating a medical residency training program for psychiatry.

Women’s & Children’s Hospital

The new Shannon West Tower expansion is introducing an observation unit, labor and delivery rooms, cutting-edge operating rooms, and an additional 100 patient beds. This expansion is complemented by the introduction of a board-certified neonatology program, which will allow specialized nursery care to be available locally.

New cancer center

Shannon Cancer Center provides comprehensive oncology care to patients and their families in San Angelo and the surrounding areas. The new Shannon Cancer Center now houses all outpatient oncology care and treatment services in one facility, meaning patients can receive high-quality, seamless care close to home.

Joining the Mayo Clinic Care Network

As a member of the Mayo Clinic Care Network, our doctors receive special access to the knowledge, expertise and resources of Mayo Clinic. It allows our providers to combine their understanding of patients’ unique medical needs with Mayo Clinic expertise at no additional cost to patients.

Neonatology program

The new Board-Certified Neonatology program allows expanded access to services in the San Angelo area for those who need this critical line of care. In just the first 5 months since the launch of the program, 11 families received the vital care they needed, close to home.

Keeping Care Close to Home

In 2020, the Shannon Board of Trustees acted on a once-in-a-generation opportunity to combine the strength and expertise of Shannon Medical Center and San Angelo Medical Center (now known as Shannon South Campus). Through this acquisition, Shannon was able to protect healthcare and local healthcare decision-making in our community, expand service offerings and ensure West Texans have access to the highest quality healthcare for generations to come.

Together with Shannon Clinic, Shannon provides access to more than 350 providers in 40 medical specialties across 25 locations. Shannon’s services include nationally recognized cardiac and stroke programs with the AirMed air ambulance, a designated level III trauma facility—which has been named top trauma facility in the state—a designated women’s & children’s hospital certified as a Level II NICU facility, and complete testing and surgical capabilities for cardiology patients, among many more services.
