Behavioral Health Expanded Access

Expanding Behavioral Health Services in San Angelo and the Concho Valley

We are excited to announce Shannon Medical Center has signed an agreement to acquire River Crest Hospital, a local behavioral health center in San Angelo, from Universal Health Services, Inc.

Our friends and neighbors of all ages who struggle with behavioral health and substance use disorders will have expanded access to the specialized care they so desperately need.

Our Communities’ Rising Need for Behavioral Health Support and Treatment Services

As a community-owned and led health system with a 90+ year history of serving West Texas, we want to make sure the residents of our community have access to the local healthcare services they need.

In our most recent Community Health Needs Assessment (CHNA), the lack of behavioral health resources was identified as the most critical healthcare need in Tom Green County. Additionally, for the second year in a row, Texas ranked as the worst state in the country for access to mental health services according to Forbes Advisor.

These findings demonstrate the urgency to make this right next step to address the behavioral health needs of our community. The addition of River Crest Hospital to the Shannon Health System will help us expand access to behavioral health care and make an even more significant impact on this vital need in San Angelo and the Concho Valley.

Through this proposed acquisition, we are committed to:

Care Coordination

With this new addition to the Shannon Health System, we will be able to provide more efficient behavioral health care through seamless care coordination and alignment across our system.

Maintaining and Enhancing Local Services

We are committed to expanding local access to behavioral health care and strengthening the services our region relies on.

Resource Investments

We are committed to improving behavioral health services in the Concho Valley through facility upgrades, services, technology and equipment as well as additional behavioral health employees and providers. Phase 1 will include expanding the River Crest campus with 20 additional beds. Phase 2 expansion will add 20 more beds to the facility.
