Our acquisition is expected to be finalized in September of 2024. Shannon is committed to expanding behavioral health services in the Concho Valley through facility upgrades, services, technology and equipment as well as additional behavioral health employees and providers. Phase 1 will include expanding the River Crest campus with 20 additional beds. Phase 2 expansion will add 20 more beds to the facility.

In the meantime, nothing will change about how or where we serve our patients. We maintain our commitment to providing high-quality behavioral health care to our family, friends and neighbors.

What's being announced?

We are excited to announce Shannon Medical Center has signed an agreement to acquire River Crest Hospital, a local behavioral health center in San Angelo, from Universal Health Services, Inc. Through focused care coordination and the enhancement of local behavioral health services and resources, this new addition to the Shannon Health System will help expand access to behavioral health care and make an even more significant impact on this vital need in San Angelo and the Concho Valley.

In our most recent CHNA, the lack of behavioral health resources was identified as the most critical healthcare need in Tom Green County. Additionally, for the second year in a row, Texas ranked as the worst state in the country for access to mental health services according to Forbes Advisor. That got our attention. These findings demonstrate the urgency to make this right and take the next step to address the behavioral health needs of our community and care for our people. The addition of River Crest Hospital to the Shannon Health System will catapult us in the right direction.

Can you tell me more about River Crest Hospital?

River Crest Hospital, an 80-bed behavioral health center owned by Universal Health, Inc, has been part of the San Angelo community for more than 30 years. It offers various programs for children, adolescents, adults and military members specializing in the treatment of behavioral health and substance use disorders.

What does this mean for River Crest patients?

Nothing changes today. All patients who are currently receiving care at River Crest will continue to receive care from the providers they know and trust.

What does this mean for Shannon Behavioral Health Services patients?

Nothing changes today. All patients who are currently receiving care at Shannon’s St. John’s campus will continue to receive care from the providers they know and trust. We will keep patients updated on any changes as we move forward in this acquisition.
